The Swiss Furnace keeps households warm even in the absence of electricity. Additionally, there are many other potential off-the-grid applications:

> An electric heating element runs inside the sand to charge it up to the set point by storing heat for long periods of time with proper thermal insulation.
> Once the heat is released as a result of natural convection, it keeps distributing consistent heat into the surrounding room, even in the absence of electricity to charge the unit.
